“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
First thing that I notice from this passage is the first three words “And we know”. It makes words that comes after to have certainty or assurance of God’s promises to be true, can be observed and experienced, fulfilled!
The rest of the passage says “that all things work together for good to them that love God.” We understand that every good and perfect gift comes from God, James 1:17, but we also experience bad things happening around us. “To them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.”, to those who are truly seeking and following God, this is something difficult to understand. If God is the source of all things, what about the bad things? When we cannot comprehend why trials come and struggle to imagine that anything good can come from them, we can rest in the security that God is in control.
This passage reminds us that although things may not be all good, God can and will use all things for good, to those who seek and love him. An example of this is the life of Joseph, from the book of Exodus, who was despised, outcast by his own brothers and was sold to slavery, but later God used his life to save God’s people, his own family who cast him out. Bad things can also happen to us, but knowing God, who is all powerful, loving and kind, can turn the bad things for our own good. Glory to God!
